There’s something profoundly satisfying about restoring old furniture back to its original glory. At Ocean Blue Painting in Vero Beach, FL, we understand this joy all too well. Our team specializes in restoring and rejuvenating various types of furniture, and today, we’re thrilled to share our recent project, which involved the careful restoration of a beautiful teak bench.
This post is going to delve into our meticulous furniture restoration process, where we brought life back to this timeless piece. If you have a cherished piece of furniture languishing in your storage, we hope this will inspire you to consider restoration.
The First Step: Deep Cleaning
The first part of our Furniture Restoration Vero Beach project was ensuring a thorough clean. We started with a pressure cleaning process using a chlorine solution. The solution was carefully selected to remove dirt, grime, and any potential mildew without damaging the wood.
The Second Step: Sanding
Once the teak bench was clean and dry, we began the sanding process. The first pass was made with 120 grit sandpaper. It’s coarser and ideal for stripping away the top layer of weathered wood. After that, we moved up to a finer 180 grit sandpaper. This particular type of sandpaper is used to smooth out the surface and prepare it for varnishing.
The Third Step: Application of Premium Marine Varnish
Choosing the right finish is critical in furniture restoration, and for this project, we chose the premium Sikkins marine varnish. Marine varnish is designed to protect wood from the harshest of conditions, making it an excellent choice for a teak bench that might face outdoor elements.
The varnish application was done with extreme care, ensuring each layer was spread evenly for a smooth and glossy finish.
The Final Step: Sanding Between Coats
To make sure each coat bonded perfectly with the next and to attain an ultra-smooth finish, we sanded between each layer of varnish using a 320 grit sandpaper. This finer grit smoothens the varnish and helps create a beautiful finish that both protects and enhances the natural beauty of the teak wood.
Our meticulous attention to detail and the use of high-quality materials resulted in a stunning transformation that breathed new life into the teak bench. You can see the result in the photo we’ve posted. The bench, once dull and lifeless, now gleams with a revitalized shine, ready for many more years of service.
At Ocean Blue Painting in Vero Beach, FL, we’re proud of our work and commitment to quality. We believe that every piece of furniture has its story and deserves the chance to shine again.
